Aims and Objectives
The objectives of the course are to describe in some detail
- The production of high quality water suitable for use in producing steam in high and medium pressure boilers.
- What impurities are present in water,
- Why such treatment is needed,
- The consequences of not treating water
- And describes the types of failures found in boilers
The course aims to provide attendees with the following:
- Better appreciation of the value of boiler feed water treatment
- Understanding of the basic science and technology involved in producing boiler feed water
- Understanding of the operation of water treatment plants
- Understanding of the production and uses of steam
- Appreciate the problems resulting from not treating water
- Appreciate the range of other failures found in boilers
- Appreciation of the equipment used to distribute steam around a plant site
- Ability to identify potential problems in producing and distributing steam
- Confidence to discuss water treatment and steam production with others

- The course will be based upon a mix of classroom instruction and discussion.

- Introduction to methods of removing impurities
Day 2
- Removing gaseous impurities
- Removing dissolved salts
- Ion exchange methods and deionisation
- Ion exchange regeneration processes
- Reverse Osmosis methods for demineralisation
- Final chemical treatment methods
- Brief introduction to problems found in boilers
Day 3
- Types of corrosion and erosion and their effects
- Other problems in boilers
- Conservation of treated water
- Steam and its usage
- Basic types of boilers
- Boiler fittings and mountings
Day 4
Steam distribution systems
Steam and Steam traps
Valves and pipework in steam distribution systems
Conserving heat in steam distribution systems
Cleaning of water treatment plant & boilers
Health and safety aspects
